14 August by Habib Jalib

Urdu
My translation into English

Some notes:

– 14th of August is Pakistani Independence day which celebrates the formation of the Islamic state of Pakistan following partition from India.

– I’ve always been a bit apprehensive about the highly nationalistic celebrations that are shown on TV and undertaken by my family members. To me it seems chauvinistic. What are people celeberating- a national identity built on the basis of the homgenisation of an incredibly diverse country. Jalib encapsulates my thoughts very well in this poem, and his anti-establishment streak along with friendship with Pakistani Marxist poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz meant I really did have to add his work to the library.
